Robert Lewandowski’s Future at Barcelona: Crucial February Talks Await

Few players at Barcelona have sparked as much debate as Robert Lewandowski over the past year. The Polish striker has experienced a mix of highs and lows, leaving fans and analysts questioning whether the 36-year-old can continue performing at the elite level.

According to Sport, Barcelona plans to address Lewandowski’s future in February, following the conclusion of the January transfer window. A clause in his contract stipulates that if he plays at least 45 minutes in half of the team’s matches this season, he will automatically secure a one-year extension. The club anticipates this benchmark will be reached in February, prompting internal discussions about his role moving forward.

However, opinions within Barcelona’s hierarchy are divided. Some members of the board believe it may be time to part ways with Lewandowski next summer to prioritize younger talent. In contrast, Sporting Director Deco and manager Hansi Flick maintain that Lewandowski’s contributions remain invaluable. They are counting on him to lead the line next season, provided he maintains his form.

Recent performances, however, have shown signs of inconsistency. While Lewandowski is currently the runaway Pichichi leader with 16 goals in 17 appearances—five ahead of his nearest competitor—his output has slowed in recent weeks. Flick has expressed concerns about the striker’s fitness, as evidenced by Lewandowski being substituted in every December match except the opener against RCD Mallorca, which he missed entirely.

The Polish forward is reportedly open to discussions about his future and is willing to step aside if the club communicates their intentions clearly and directly. For now, his goal remains to stay and contribute to Barcelona’s success.
