Fabio Capello Criticizes AC Milan’s Transfer Decisions and Squad Strategy
Italian football legend Fabio Capello has raised serious questions about AC Milan’s transfer decisions and overall squad strategy. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello voiced concerns about the club’s recent purchases and sales, suggesting that key decisions lacked thoughtful football evaluation and alignment with head coach Paulo Fonseca’s vision.
“Before debating whether the decisions were correct, we need to ask two questions: Who made these choices? And were they in agreement with Paulo Fonseca, the coach?” Capello said. He emphasized the importance of understanding these factors to evaluate Milan’s transfer moves effectively.
Capello criticized some of Milan’s signings, such as Emerson Royal, arguing that the Brazilian full-back does not meet the standards required to play at San Siro. “Playing for Milan has a different weight. Emerson Royal doesn’t seem like a Milan player to me. Why sign him when you already had Calabria, Jimenez, and Kalulu, who could have also filled in as a center-back?” he questioned.
Capello also highlighted the need for smarter investments in critical positions, particularly at right-back and striker. While acknowledging the arrivals of Álvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham as competent players, he noted the absence of a “real goalscorer” capable of delivering 20 goals a season.
“The main priority should have been a top-class striker, given Giroud’s departure. Milan fans are asking why the club didn’t secure a proven goal machine. But realistically, who could have been bought with the same budget? Morata is a complete player and a leader. I don’t think Milan could have found anyone better,” he added.
Capello praised former Milan manager Ariedo Braida for his exceptional ability to evaluate players’ fit for the club’s unique environment. “Braida always asked, ‘Is he fit for San Siro?’ It’s not like playing elsewhere.”
The legendary coach expressed concern that Milan’s decisions may have overlooked these critical considerations, leaving fans questioning the club’s direction under the current leadership.
